Chapter Eight

Loki was feeling confused and out of sorts. One minute he wanted Tom to fuck him senseless, the next he didn’t want Tom anywhere near him. If only he could put more distance between Tom and himself maybe he could sort things out, but he couldn’t stay outside forever. Finally, Loki made himself get off the lounge and go to the door. For once the cat was nowhere to be seen. Too bad. Loki wouldn’t miss her one bit if she happened to slip out when he opened the door. He’d even give her a boost over the wall. Loki shut the door behind him and padded across the living room. A portrait hanging over the couch caught his eye and he stopped to take a closer look. The man in the painting looked like the captain. He was dressed in military garb and he had a lot of medals on his chest. But, no…The jaw was too square, the expression too stern.

A heavy hand landed on Loki’s shoulder. Tom! Loki twisted his head. His gaze swung from Tom’s face to the painting and back again. “Is it you in the picture?”

Sawyer made an odd noise in his throat and covered it with a cough. “That’s my father.”

Loki tilted his head from one side to the other as he studied the portrait. For the first time Loki wondered what his father…no, his sperm donor, looked like. “He looks like you, only…”

“Only what?”

Loki shrugged. “He doesn’t look happy.”

Sawyer snorted. “You have a good eye. I guess he was happy in his own way, but he wasn’t a man who showed much emotion. Or affection.”

“But he was there? When you were growing up?”

“Physically. But his mindset was always on the army. He was a stern man, and a rigid taskmaster. Not an ounce of sympathy in him. As a kid, if I got injured, he would tell me to be a brave soldier. He didn’t do sloppy sentimentalism, as he called it. Yeah, he was military through and through. You wouldn’t call him warm and fuzzy.” Sawyer let out a strained chuckle.

“Like your cat?”

This time Sawyer let out a real laugh. “Exactly.”

“What does it mean, exactly?”

“Fuzzy? Soft and furry, as in my cat’s hair is fuzzy. Or it can mean a feeling of happiness, or love.”

“You love your cat?”

“I do.”

Loki thought about that. Intellectually he knew what love meant, but he had no idea what it really felt like.

“What about you? Did you get to spend any time with your father?”

“I don’t have a father.”

“Everyone has a father.”

Loki flipped his hair and averted his eyes. “I don’t.” He didn’t want to talk about his humiliating past. No one could understand, especially Thomas Sawyer, who had grown up with a real father. The captain had everything a man could want…And yet sometimes Loki saw sadness in Tom’s eyes. Captain Sawyer had a nice home, a career, his freedom…What more could he want?

“I get it, Loki,” Tom said. “But if you ever want to talk, I’m here for you.
